            The
official name of the Philippines has changed several times and since the end of
World War II, the country’s official name is the Republic of the Philippines. In
1945, the Philippines were the first country in Southeast Asia to gain
independence after World War II (Tope et. al, 2013). Furthermore, the
Philippines is made up of 7,107 islands located in the South China Sea,
Philippine Sea, Sulu Sea, Celebes Sea, and the Luzon Strait.

            Historically,
this country is named after King Philip II of Spain (Guillermo et. al, 1997).
Hence, it showed that the Spanish has colonized the Philippines. Ferdinand
Magellan sailed across the Pacific and landed in the Philippines and claimed
them for Spain in 1521. However, Magellan failed to colonize the land and he
was killed when trying to take down a Filipino chief named Lapu Lapu (Tim
Lambert, 2017).  However, Miguel Lopez de
Legazpi was able to colonize the Philippines in 1571 and owned vast estates worked
by the Filipinos. Emilio Aguinaldo declared the Philippines independent on 12th
June 1898. However, Tim (2017) stated that the British captured Manila in 1762
for two years and handed it back to the Spanish in 1764 under the terms of the
Treaty of Paris.

In 19th Century, came a war
between the United States of America and Spain in 1898. The Americans won the
war and took over the Philippines. Then, a war between the American forces and
the Filipino began on 4th February 1899. The war ended on 1902 when
the leader was captured. The war continued in 20th Century, when Japan
attacked the US fleet at Pearl Harbor in December 1941. The Japanese troops
invaded the Philippines on 10th December 1941 and take over the
Philippines on 6th May 1942. However American troops returned to the
Philippines and recaptured Manila in February 1945.  On 4th July 1946, the Philippines
became independent and Manuel Roxas was the first president.
