Reviewing media business expert and consultant Greg Satell in

Reviewing the tasks you have
accomplished in the past week, how often do you think you have used smart
technology to complete these tasks? Perhaps it was more often than you realize.
Smart technology has been rapidly growing and is becoming a large part of our
daily lives. Developers are constantly crafting many forms of technology that
have steadily pervaded our society. Today, smart technology is used in phones,
computers, TVs, and even homes. It can help people with various disabilities or
perform everyday tasks such as controlling a washing machine from a phone.
Because of people’s tendency to rely increasingly on technology, companies’
desire to increase their profits, and inventors’ or designers’ drive to develop
technology that perform tasks that people are unable or unwilling to do, the
amount of smart technology in our society is increasing.

First of all, dependency on technology
is a large contributor to the growth of smart technology especially in regards
to smart phones. Every day, people rely on the convenient use of smart phones
to complete multiple and varied tasks for work, social media, and even getting
around town. The number of Americans who use smart phones is increasing. Statistics
by the Pew Research Center, Science and Technology, in the article titled
“Mobile Fact Sheet,” showed that “The vast majority of Americans
– 95% – now own a cell phone of some kind. The share of Americans that own
smart phones is now 77%, up from just 35% in Pew Research Center’s first survey
of smart phone ownership conducted in 2011” (“Mobile Fact Sheet”). Not
only has our dependency on smart phones increased, but, according to media business
expert and consultant Greg Satell in an article titled “Why The Future Of
Technology Is All Too Human,” advancements in smart technology found in
other devices such as computers have improved to the point that its ability to
perform human tasks such as displaying “recommendations from Amazon” or even
organizing travel plans have become a reality. “We didn’t see the algorithms at
work, but they were there, computing on our behalf” (Satell). A study conducted
by Ding Hooi Ting et al. found that among Malaysian college students, smart
phone usage was positively correlated with convenience (198). A positive
correlation was also found between cell phone usage as it related to “social influence”
and “social needs” (Ding Hooi Ting et al. 199). In other words, as the college students’
desire for smart phone portability, need to connect to important people in their
lives, and the effects of what others thought of them increased, so did smart phone
usage (Ding Hooi Ting et al. 199). This led to an increase of purchase behaviors
(Ding Hooi Ting et al. 199). “The indication from this study is that university
students with high dependency on smart phones tend make evaluations based on their
past experiences in determining future purchase behaviour” (Ding Hooi Ting et al.
199). Given these facts, it’s no wonder that companies are targeting smart
technology devices and development to sell their products to technology-dependent

technology enables businesses to use web services through the internet to
generate prospects for revenue. Gregory Hale points out in his article, “No-Passing Fad–Web Services a Smart Technology,”
how different companies are able to do this. According to Hale, web services
use technology through the internet that finds a service or item’s code for the
user (11). “Whether it’s building a car or
refining petroleum, everyone has to find new ways to improve the way they do
business. Web services are not a passing marketing whim. They could push your
company over the top” (Hale 11). This improves the way consumers buy
items and services and thus increases a company’s profit. In a Consumer Reports
article, “Samsung, LG, and Vizio Smart TVs Are Recording-and Sharing Data
about-Everything You Watch,” smart technology can be used by companies to
record what you watch in order to recommend new items you might be interested
in. “The technology is known in the television
business as automatic content recognition, or ACR, and it has spawned an entire
secondary industry focused on collecting and monetizing information about the
viewing behavior of TV viewers directly from their own television sets” (“Samsung,
LG and Smart TVs”). Since they are suggesting new items that suit consumers’
interests, they improve the possibility of purchases. In fact, increased use of
automated services has also led the increase in business revenue. Kaja
Whitehouse in the article “Rise of the Robots at AOL Lead to Job Cuts,” states
that by using automated ads, AOL experienced a “37% surge” in revenue in 2013,
up 12% from its’ previous quarter. Because of the lucrative prospects smart
technology brings, there is a drive today for business to invest in its development.

The evolution and development of technology has changed the way people go
about their daily lives, from finding information online to scheduling their
day. In just a short time, people have gone from phone booths to smart phones
and dictionaries to Google, thanks to the advancements in technology. Today,
there are a plethora of apps to choose from which are not only convenient but
beneficial. For instance, Anna Bawden in her article “Winning Smart Technology
with a Social Purpose,” discusses an app EpsMon that helps monitor people with
epilepsy by assessing patients’ risk of seizures and alerting them of when to
see a doctor. Other examples of smart phone technology are smart phone based
devices and applications for health purposes (Vashist, Schneider, and Luong 104).
These devices according to the article “Commercial Smartphone-Based Devices and
Smart Applications for Personalized Healthcare Monitoring and Management,” remotely
sense problems in order to provide mobile healthcare for patients in remote
areas by using a wireless blood pressure monitor, Wireless Pulse Oximeter,
which determines the blood oxygen saturation, and a wireless body analysis
scale (Vashist, Schneider, and Luong 109). Developers
strive to make smart technology like these and others which will help make
peoples’ lives easier. That is why many developers and investors alike are
now focusing on what is called the Internet of Things (Bodor). The Internet of
Things is a network of “software, hardware and applications” that interact with
each other and physical objects such as a coffee maker or even a car (Bodor).
In “How the Growing Impact of IoT Is Automating the World,” Rob Bodor explains
how city governments are starting to realize the benefits the Internet of Things
will have in society. For instance, the smart city, Barcelona has a network of
fiber-optic cables that monitor how much energy is used throughout the city. It
also has lampposts that adjust the brightness when people walk by, and provides
free internet throughout the city (Bodor).

technology has rapidly increased and changed over the years. As it has been
integrated more and more into our society, we have begun to rely on it to
accomplish our everyday tasks. This, in turn, encourages companies to put more
effort into designing technology that generates profit. Companies also hire
designers and developers to create smart technology that not only does simple
tasks for people who are unwilling to do them but also for people who are unable
to do them. The future endeavors in technology include the Internet of Things
which will revolutionize daily life because of its ability to control everyday
objects using the internet (Bodor). This technology can now be seen in smart
houses and city infrastructures (Bodor). Smart
technology is greatly improving. The more technology advances, the more promising
the future looks. Perhaps we are heading towards a time when society will look more
like what we see in sci-fi shows.  For now,
this is only the beginning of a society embracing a new and exciting frontier.
