Problem Statement Schizophrenia is a disorder that affects how a person feels, thinks, and behaves. We chose this disorder because it is an interesting topic to discuss. There are 5 different subtypes of schizophrenia, some being more detrimental than others. The disorder’s cause is unknown, but schizophrenia is known to develop through genetic factors. Although it is interesting, it’s a psychotic disorder that affects 1% of the world’s population. The main complication though is that people who suffer from schizophrenia may experience hallucinations, delusions, and movement disorders. History of Schizophrenia The disease was first identified as a discrete mental illness by Dr. Emile Kraepelin in 1887 and it had been believed to have accompanied mankind through its history. Later on, the Dr. Kraepelin categorized this disease as “dementia praecox.” In 1910, the term “schizophrenia” was formed by a psychiatrist named Paul Eugen Bleuler. The word comes from the Greek words “schizo” (split) and “phren” (mind). Schizophrenia is not to be confused with Split personality disorder though; the term refers to the detachment or “loosening” of feelings and thoughts. Symptoms A very rare and complex disease like schizophrenia is hard to understand, but it is understood that people may experience behavioral, cognitive, mood, psychological or speech symptoms. Now these symptoms are categorized by positive, negative or cognitive. If you have positive symptoms of schizophrenia you may suffer hallucination, delusions, thought disorders or movement disorders. Now is you have negative symptoms you may begin to feel a disruption to normal emotions or behaviors. Cognitive symptoms are poor executive functioning, trouble focusing or problems with working memory. Now, you ask yourself why does schizophrenia happen in certain people? Now, this is caused by several factors such as genetic and environmental factors. Schizophrenia is a disease that runs in the family. There are many areas of the brain that are affected by schizophrenia such as the Prefrontal Cortex. The prefrontal cortex helps people think logically and organize their thoughts. People that suffer from schizophrenia have less movement in their prefrontal cortex, this may be why they suffer from delusions. Other parts of the brain that are affected by schizophrenia is the Auditory Cortex and the Visual Cortex. Now when these two parts of the brain are affected the person may think that they are hearing and seeing something that is not real. Another part of the brain that is affected is the Basil Ganglia which involves movement and thinking skills. Studies show that people that suffer from schizophrenia have larger basil ganglia than the average person, this might affect the movement patterns of schizophrenic people who often have motor dysfunctions. Another brain structure that is different in people that suffer from schizophrenia is the Amygdala. The amygdala is responsible for basic feelings. People that suffer from schizophrenia have smaller amygdala causing them to have little emotion. These are all very serious problems so you ask yourself how can you cure schizophrenia? How to Cure Schizophrenia Although there is no cure for schizophrenia there are many ways to reduce the symptoms such as medications or therapy. There are many medications that are used to reduce symptoms of schizophrenia but they are all for different purposes. For example, reserpine is used to reduce blood pressure and relief psychotic symptoms. There are also other medications that help relieve mental/mood conditions such as fluphenazine. Another way to relieve the symptoms of schizophrenia is by getting therapy. There are many different types of therapies such as family therapy, behavior therapy, psychoeducation and many more but you pick the on that you think best suits you. Although as I said before that there is no cure for schizophrenia there are many ways to live a normal life even though you have schizophrenia. Institutes Specialized in Schizophrenia Although, you can use medications and therapy to minimize symptoms of schizophrenia there are also many institutes that are specialized in helping people with that certain disorder. Such as, National Institute of Mental Health, this institute allows people to keep on living their daily life by simply using their time to find a cure for schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is not only common in normal people it can also be diagnosed in people such as Eduard Einstein. In conclusion, although schizophrenia can’t be cured there are many ways to minimize symptoms and live a normal, by using medications and taking therapy.
