Patients and methodology:A descriptive cross sectional study on people aged above 18 years of age residing in Erbil city was done. The sample size was calculated on the basis of previous studies which estimate the prevalence of hypertension in Erbil city. Systematic random sampling was used to select study subjects in this study.A predesigned, pretested questionnaire was used containing items to assess socio demographic profile like age, sex, identification data, and socioeconomic status. Information on behavioral risk factors was collected including tobacco use, alcohol use, family history of hypertension and related factors; clinical measurements such as weight, height, and blood pressure should be obtained using standardized protocols and instruments; cholesterol, triglycerides, and high density lipoprotein (HDL) were measured.Blood pressure was recorded two times in sitting position, in the right arm, using a standard android dial BP apparatus (mercury type of BP apparatus is phased out from health care setting) and the average of the two readings was used in the analyses. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Overweight and obesity were defined as BMI ? 23–24.9?kg/m2 and BMI ? 25?kg/m2, respectively.A prior ethical consideration for the study was done. Each selected subject was given explanation about the procedure and objectives of the study and they were informed that the data will be saved till the end on the study and it is fully secured and no person can get access to these data except me and a written informed consent was obtained from all participants and an approval was obtained from the institutional ethics committee.Exclusion criteria: Those younger than 18 years were excluded from the study.Statistical analysis: Organization and statistical analysis of the data were done by using SPSS (statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 19 and EXCEL.
