Majority of the applications of the Six Sigma approach can be found in large business organizations and companies. The immense popularity of the approach can find its origin in the General Electric’s $1 billion savings due to the implementation of the Six Sigma approach. In the present-day scenario, the Six Sigma approach founds massive application in the following sectors:
Manufacturing: Historically, Six Sigma approach was first implemented at Motorola in the 1980s. Soon after the success of the approach at Motorola, many other companies also implemented this technique to increase their savings. The most common examples are Johnson and Johnson, Texas Instruments, and Telefonica de Espana. Out of which, the Johnson and Johnson recording a mind-blowing amount of $600 million as savings. The company invested $30 million in the Six Sigma program and saved over $200 million (Kwak & Anbari, 2006).
Finance: The Six Sigma approach has played a pivotal role in the fast allocation of funds to the company leading to a considerable reduction in the bank service charges. Further, with the inception of automated payments; efficiency of reporting and documenting credits has also increased. In addition, the defect related to checking credits, and collection of checks has also been reduced with the implementation of the Six Sigma approach. The major examples are Bank of America and American Express. Primarily, the Bank of America recorded staggering improvements in their working. With a 10.4% increase in the customer satisfaction and 24% decrease in the total number of customer issues, it can be considered that Six Sigma has been the pivotal factor with respect to the efficiency in financial operations of the organization (Kwak & Anbari, 2006).The American Express was the financial institution that was benefited by the Six Sigma approach to comprehensively eradicate the occurrence of non-received renewal credit cards. Besides, financial institutions such as the GE Capital, JP Morgan Chase and Sun Trust Banks, also benefited from the implementation of the Six Sigma approach (Kwak & Anbari, 2006).
Supply Chain: Efficient supply chain setup requires specific products to be delivered to the customers before the expected delivery date. With the implementation of the Six Sigma principles, defects in the supply chain management can be minimized. The prominent examples of this category include Geodis and the Transport Corporation of India (Kwak & Anbari, 2006).
Healthcare: Healthcare sector involves zero tolerance for defects and medical errors. Hence, it is important to minimize the number of medical errors by implementing optimized quality standards and protocols. With the implementation of Six Sigma in the healthcare sector, we can achieve – reduction in the inventory of highly expensive health care equipment, increased efficiency of healthcare delivery, and streamlined process of documentation. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center achieved a 45% decrease in the patience preparation time after the implementation of the Six Sigma approach (Kwak & Anbari, 2006). 
Critical evaluation of the Six Sigma approach:
    Evaluation of the quality management within an organization or company heavily depends on the data gathered through different methods. However, solving complex and complicated problems require enormous amounts of data to be collected, categorized, evaluated and analyzed. It is also evident that the quality of manufactured products and services is directly proportional to the quality of the data analyzed and acted upon. Hence, it is of paramount importance that any required data or information must be easily available to the management, and the employees working within an organization (Moosa & Sajid, 2010). 
Generally, statistics are used to represent data in an understandable form for the managers and the employees. The adoption of the Six Sigma approach leads to the implementation of a data-dependent management style. It involves the use of basic to complex level statistics representing different parameters of the business. 
The critical evaluation of the Six Sigma approach reveals that two different types of statistics are used in problem solving: 
1. Descriptive
            2. Inferential
The Descriptive statistics are used for the quantitative measure of different characteristics of the data. It is able to provide information related to the product – including its process and other aspects. While the inferential statistics is related to the study of the sample and interpretation of the results. Thus, allowing the discovery of relations, probabilities and analytics within the data (Moosa & Sajid, 2010).
    The Six Sigma approach is based on the discovery of different types of causal relationships in the complicated systems by using different statistical methods. Though, it has been established that many different training programmes claiming Six Sigma certification are not good enough to develop the skills at a practical level. Hence, the trainees become highly incapable. This is due to the fact that such training programmes do not impart ample statistical capability to the trainees.
    The Six Sigma approach is a significant approach to make revolutionary improvements in a business organization. The approach considers the active participation of all the managers at different levels within the organization. Contrarily, the implementation of the approach is not a sure shot success formula. It requires a visionary top-level management that can develop effective strategies and plans. Further, it also requires a comprehensive training of the managers to make them aware of the advanced level DMAIC and DMADV processes (Moosa & Sajid, 2010).
