One of the brilliant minds behind laying the foundation pillar of the
Indian multinational corporation Infosys Ltd,N.R.Narayana Murthy,is an Indian
IT industrialist,who is listed among the great industrialists of the era.

Born on 20 August
1946, in Sidlaghatta, Karnataka, Murthy plays a major role in ensuring the
success of Infosys,which makes Infosys as a major IT company which provides
business consulting, information technology and outsourcing services,etc. He
had a brilliant mindset,and an excellent business sense.With it,he laid down
the pillars of Infosys with six other software professionals including Nandan
Nilekani and N. S. Raghavan with an initial capital of just Rs. 10, 000.Because
of his and his colleagues efforts,the company grew manifold to be one of the
top IT services companies in India. His company’s contribution to the growth of
the IT sector in India has been immense and the ‘Time’ magazine described him
as the “Father of Indian IT Sector”. He has been honored with several awards like
Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri awards for his contribution to the Indian
industrial sector.

He possessed a great
mind and received his education from one of the top technological institutions
in India.He worked with Patni computer systems in Pune before becoming an
enterprenuer.He always dreamt of becoming an entrepreneur and had a hope of
forming a big company in order to provide job opportunities to the youngsters.


Childhood and early life:

Murthy was born in a
middle class family and his faher wanted him to be civil servant like his
uncle,but the young boy had an ambition to become an engineer.He cleared the
entrance exam for the India Institute of Technology(IIT) after completing his
schooling with a high rank,and received a scholarship too, but  his father couldn’t afford his fees expenses.So
he joined a local engineering college, the National Institute of Engineering
and graduated in 1967 with a degree in Electrical Engineering.He then got his
master’s degree from Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur in 1969.There,he
met with a famous computer scientist from US whose talks thoroughly impressed
him and gave him inspiration to pursue a career in the IT sector in future.Later,he
had many job offers with high salaries,but he rejected them all to take up a
jpb in India Institute of Management(IIM),Ahmedabad where one he met one of the
IIM’s professors who had a personal talk about an interesting job opportunity
at the institute with him.


He was designated the
position of a chief system programmer at the IIM,Ahmedabad,where he worked upon
installing India’s first time-sharing computer system.There he had hectic work
load of 20 hours a day,but he learnt a lot during his position at IIM,which he
even admires today as one of the best decisions of his life.In 1970s he worked
abroad,nurturing his skills in Paris and the time he spent there also had a
life changing influence on him.At the starting,a staunch leftist who supported
Communism, eventually changed his views and thus he concluded that compassionate
capitalism and the large-scale creation of jobs was the only practical method
of eradicating poverty.He developed a lot in hus skills from his time spent in
wstern countries,but he wanted to open a company of his own in his
homeland.So,he came back and started a company called Softronics which failed
after just one and a half years.Thus,he joined Patni Computer Systems in
Pune.Later,he was determined to become an entrepreneur again,and thus formed
another company “Infosys Consultants Pvt Ltd.” (now known as Infosys Ltd.)
by teaming up with six different software professionals with a capital of just
Rs.10000 in Pune in 1981.The The company’s headquarters was shifted from Pune
to Bangalore in 1983.Murthy became the CEO of Infosys and handled his position
till 2002.In 2002,he became the chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor in
2006.In 2006,he took his retirement from the company with the  title of Chairman Emeritus.

He conjointly served
as a director on the boards of DBS Bank, Unilever, and ICICI.Murthy has also
given his services on the advisory boards and councils of many institutions
like Cornell University, the UN Foundation, Ford Foundation, and the
Indo-British Partnership.

In his absence
,Infosys saw degradation,and thus ,in June 2013,he returned to the company as
Executive Chairman and Additional Director .Later,in June 2014,he stepped down
as the Executive Chairman.


Major Works:

Murthy is best known
as one of the co-founders of Infosys,Ltd,India’s one of the largest IT services
company with branches all over the globe.

Under his
leadership,Infosys made its place on Nasdaq as the first Indian company.

Due to his dedication
and hardwork, Infosys also achieved the tilte of first Indian company with
revenue of $1 billion a year.


Awards and Achievements:

In 2000,he was honoured with Padma
Shri,India’s fourth highest civilian award by the Government of India ,for his
outstanding contribution to IT industries.

In 2003,he was awarded with Ernst & Young
Entrepreneur of the Year Award by Ernst & Young World
Entrepreneur of the Year Jury.

In 2007,he was awarded with IEEE Ernst Weber
Engineering Leadership Recognition by the Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers.

Again in 2007,he was honoured with Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)
by Government of United Kingdom.

In 2008,he was awarded with Officer of
the Legion of Honor by Government of France.

In 2008,the Government Of India blessed
him with the second highest civilian award of India,the Padma Vibhushan,for his
extraordinary services to the IT sector in India.

In 2009,he was awarded with Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship
by Woodrow Wilson
International Center for Scholars.

In 2010,he was awarded with IEEE Honorary Membership by Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

In 2011,he was awarded with NDTV Indian of the Year’s Icon of India by

In 2013,he got the award Philanthropist
of the Year by the Asian Awards.

In 2013 again,he was bestowed by Sayaji
Ratna Award by Baroda Management Association,Vadodara.

Greatest Global Indian Living Legends award by NDTV.
