Moreover, Haram. When Yusuf died, Nigerian forces declared that

Moreover, the group’s purpose of being in Nigeria is to fight in hopes to overthrow the government by force and create Nigeria into an Islamic state. The members of Boko Haram are promoting their version of Islam by being present in Nigeria.  Boko Haram has obtained the most territory captured by an army and this suggests how much of a threat this group is to the people of Nigeria and its neighbors as its strength shows dominance. The group’s main form of action and dominance are bombings, killings, kidnappings and the burning of villages. It is estimated that the number of casualties caused by the group are over 15,000 people.  Many more have been affected because of forced migration.  Boko Haram has begun establishing schools in order to teach Islam, one of their ways of promotion. Not only do these schools encourage the conversion of religions solely out of fear of the group but the schools have become a spot for enlisting jihadis (“Who”).Boko Haram has split into two factions.  One which is focused locally on grievances and another focused on expanding. The Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima said in February of 2014 that Boko Haram has acquired better and more advanced weapons than the Nigerian military itself therefore it is nearly impossible for the military to defeat this group (Sergie and Johnson). Boko Haram has its strongest control over the northern states – Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. Despite the strength of this terrorist group, in 2009, Nigeria’s security forces gained control over the group’s headquarters and killed Mr. Yusuf, the former leader of Boko Haram.  When Yusuf died, Nigerian forces declared that Boko Haram had been defeated however Abubakar Shekau arose as the new leader, and he is still alive today (“Who”). Throughout the 2000s Boko Haram has been a great threat and in 2013 the US Department of State declared Boko Haram a terrorist organization (Sergie and Johnson).Across the fifteen years that Boko Haram has been organized there have been three leaders.  The first leader of Boko Haram was Yusuf, who founded the group and the leader at the time of the first invasion of Nigeria.  After Yusuf was killed by the Nigerian forces, Shekau became the leader of the group.  During Shekau’s leadership Abu Musab al-Barnawi rose in power and he declared himself the new leader.  Shekau is still a member of the group but his leadership was stripped of him.  Though Shekau still has loyal soldiers, Abu has more influence when it comes to the group.  Abu Musab al-Barnawi also happens to be the son of Yusuf.  There are many members of Boko Haram and the Central Intelligence Agency estimates that the groups consists of thousands and that 9,000 specialize in bombing. Of these growing numbers there are many new recruits as the growth of poverty among Nigerian civilians and poor education allow for easy access to new recruits for Boko Haram because of the vulnerability of the sufferers (“Who”).
