James WatsonJames Watson was born on April 6th, 1928. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois. As a boyWatson loved birdwatching, it was one of his favorite hobbies. After James completed grammarschool and two years of high school, he was given a tuition scholarship to the University ofChicago. After four years in college, Watson received a Bachelor of Science degree. During hisfour years in college Watson’s love for birdwatching turned into a love for genetics. He was ableto pursue this love for genetics because he received a graduate student Fellowship for Zoologyfrom Indiana University. After being at Indiana University for a few years, Watson received hisPhd degree in Zoology.When Watson left Indiana University he then went to Copenhagen, Denmark and spenthis first postdoctoral year as a Merck Fellow of the National Research Council. During his timein Copenhagen he worked with bacterial viruses. In the spring of 1951 Watson attended aSymposium at the Zoology Station in Naples, Italy. There he met Maurice Wilkins. Wilkinsshowed Watson an X-ray diffraction pattern of crystalline DNA. When Watson saw this X-ray heimmediately changed what he was studying, he know knew he wanted to study and research thestructural chemistry of nucleic acids and proteins. Watson eventually received an opportunity towork at the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge.Watson met Crick at the Cavendish Laboratory, and immediately hit it off. They bothwere solving the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick’s first attempt to solve the structure ofDNA was unsuccessful. However, in March, 1953 there second attempt was based on moreexperimental evidence that Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins gathered. Watson and Crickfinally came up with the double-helical structure idea. Other biologist from around the worlddubbed the double-helical configuration as one of the most important discoveries in the 20thcentury.At the same time Watson and Crick were working on the structure of DNA, Watson wasalso trying to discover the structure of TMV. TMV is a single strand RNA virus that affectsmostly plants. He used multiple X-ray diffraction techniques. His goal was to see if chemicalsub-viruses were also arranged in a helical structure. He eventually discovered that TMV wasalso in a helical structure.James Watson has won multiple awards for his discoveries in the structure of DNA andthe structure of TMV.
