Information Systems have
become an integral part in the day-to-day activities of the business. At every
level in the business decision, these evolving information systems takes its
place. Information systems includes activities like collection, creation and
storage of data. It also includes processing of data and distribution to the
end points. Hardware, Software, Data, End-users and data manipulation are the
major components that constitute to the infrastructure of the information
systems. The companies have ensured that these information systems were in
total sync with the goals and objectives of the organization. The ease of
operations has increased drastically which had led to the production of best
results thus enhancing the business processes. 
It has penetrated into all sectors of the industry proving that it is an
essential element in all the business operations. With the introduction of
these systems, there has been a significant impact in the business activities
and the way they are handled. The information systems have evolved from manual
systems then to computerized systems and now to the integrated information
systems which is the current trend.

Resource Planning, Material Resources Planning II, Entity Resource Planning and
Traditional ERP

Trends

The current trend is the
artificial intelligence which is even able to forecast the performance of the
business. There are functional advances which includes CRM, HRM, BI and
eCommerce.

2 – Evolution, Levels of Decision-making and Value of Information Systems

In the initial stages,
the role of Information systems was mainly to process the data electronically
like the transactions, book-keeping and accounts related information. Later,
the additional feature of processing this data into reports was introduced.
This has created the scope for the development of business applications which
provided the users with the reports which would be very much useful to make any
kind of decisions, which is termed as the Management Information Systems(MIS).
Later this reporting was taken to a next level as an evolution which is the
concept of Decision Support Systems (DSS). The evolution then grew into the
stage of Executive Information Systems (EIS) which would take the inputs from
the MIS, DSS and the other available sources to yield the right information to
the executives.  The trends were changing
rapidly from MIS to eCommerce.

Decision
Making

There were different
levels in which these information systems were helpful in decision making like
the strategic management, tactical management and operational management.

Data Warehouse, Data
mining, Online Analytical processing have added great value to the information
