I believe I deserve to be selected for scholarships because as a hard working student I commit myself to effectively take advantage of the opportunity that the scholarships will provide me. Besides, I am a student that does not only persistently works hard academically, but also I constantly try to improve my own community’s quality of life by doing volunteer work.An inclination to broaden my knowledge and an ardent desire to solve problems pertinent to design, planning, and optimization of production processes in developing nations motivate me to pursue Masters in Industrial Engineering. Watching television programs like extreme engineering which gave insight into invention and engineering shaped my childhood. I was captivated by how valuable equipment could be made from the creative thoughts of a person and how things could be explained logically thus increasing my curiosity towards Engineering. Being a citizen of Nigeria where lack of technology and engineering equipment is a major concern has enabled me to appreciate the daily importance of engineering. My study so far has been beyond the four walls of a classroom to include industrial visits and training. In my 4th year, I undertook an internship program with an engineering company responsible for the design of buildings, equipment, tank farms and industries in Nigeria. While at NETCO, I got an opportunity to be a part of a multifaceted team of engineers and project managers. While working in this domain, I determined the best location of production plants to reduce costs of transporting finished products to customers. I was also introduced to operations planning, where I learned project scheduling, monitoring, and control. I understood the potential of Operations research and its effect on the performance and revenue of an engineering process.Looking at my home country, Nigeria, there are indigenous industries which require Industrial Engineering to increase physical productivity. I intend to implement unique ideas to help these industries reach their highest potential by determining the most effective way to create a product or service. On the other hand, there are other leadership roles that I played in community organizations. From 2009-2010, I was a programming intern for a leadership program at the university where I organized and planned social events for student participants. In addition, I was the Student Government Vice President at my community college where I organized social, cultural and community service events for the campus, and led group discussions about social justice as a project facilitator for an anti-discrimination club. Prior to this, I was the Community Service Chairperson for the Student Government, and was in charge of organizing community service activities for the campus including blood drives and a monthly cleanup of local neighborhood streets. To reach my goals, I need as much help as possible. I already have the moral support of my family and friends, but that is not quite enough to make my dream come true. I hope that your organization can help me reach this dream by awarding me your scholarship.
