FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEMTo continue with the spectacular and mysterious Harry Potter universe invented by Joanne K. Rowling, in 2016 appeared the spin-off “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them”. The film bases on the school book of the same title appearing for the first time fictive in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” in which the students had to buy it together with their other school materials. But that wasn’t enough for the author and she decided to write a real book of the most fantastic and interesting beasts. First of all, the book is a guide through lots of different magic creatures just like an usual encyclopaedia with no storyline, but nevertheless together with Rowling the director managed to make a spectacular and thrilling film with an epic story behind it.This spin-off of the Harry Potter franchise jumps back in time to explore the wizarding world of 1926 in New York, which is being threatened by mystical acts of destruction and a group of extremist “no-majs” (the American term for Muggles describing those unable to use magic). Even bevor the film hit the big screen a huge shitstorm about the new term for non-magic people came on twitter. Big fans didn’t want to accept “no-maj” as a synonym for “muggle”. But in the end, they just had to accept that American People always have their own way of life, also in the universe of Harry Potter. The fictive author Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) arrives in the city as part of a global study of fantastic beasts, but he gets caught up in this conflict when some of the magical creatures in his care are accidentally released. Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Colin Farrell, Ezra Miller, and Johnny Depp co-star in this fantasy adventure, which was directed by David Yates (who helmed four of the Harry Potter films). To realise this film-project a huge amount of digital effects was necessary. Even though it was very difficult to animate the different types of beasts on the computer, they did a great job! In the movie the beasts look very realistic and their movements seem natural. All in all, “Fantastic Beasts and Were To Find Them” is not only a documentary about several magic beasts as we might imagine while reading the title. It also shows you the wizarding world of 1926 and what happened before Harry Potter was born. It’s exciting, entertaining, and even funny at times.
