Design of the human kind.Design has been existed all

Design has been one of the most critical elements for wide
variety of disciplines from the existence of the human kind.Design has been
existed all the time where human kind existed. From the stone age to our era, from
architecture to graphic design, it is still improving.I would like to give some
examples over some items used at those times in the manner of product design.Essentially,it
all started with the existence of the human kind.If we start from the tools
that used in earlier ages,we can see that people who were living at those ages
were using weapons such as knifes, axes, hammers, grinder in order to hunt, build
or create to make a living.

Why there were different variety of
tools,weapons to be used?

That is a question to ask.Perhaps that’s the point where the
design starts.Need of design arises from the purpose of the usage of a thing
such as creating different shaped weapon as an axe to hunt and hammer to build
perhaps. What makes an axe different than a hammer is that axe is lighter
compared to a hammer as well as having two sharp edges. These features of an
axe makes is suitable for hunting by making hunters to able to run with it to
catch their hunt whereas a hammer is heavier and less suitable for running.

The Stone Age receives its name
from the materials the people of that time period used for tools. Stone was
harder than wood and easier to obtain than bone or metal.People were using
stone  to create things back then not
just because of it was harder than other materials it was also due to existing
technological circumstances. As the civilization and technology kept developing
so do the things used did.So if we consider about iron age, people weren’t using
stones to make weapons anymore, instead they were using iron, steel which is a
harder material than stone and hard to break. From this angle, I would like to state
that design has strong boundaries to technological developments. Now in our
current time, invention of computers and internet even leaded to born of new
design disciplines such as web design, user interface design which are some of

Back then in pre-historic ages, design
was less likely to be human friendly but nowadays there are crucial elements
about  design such as
antropometry,ergonomics,aesthetics,sustainability.Design is bending on details
where there are  many example of a same
product in current time.A good design is perhaps depending on the harmony of
these elements at their best usage according to circumstances.

So what is
the definition of a good design and which elements it is bounded to be good in
modern society ?

According to Dieter Rams Ten Principles of “Good Design”,

Good Design Is
Innovative : The possibilities for innovation are not, by any
means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new
opportunities for innovative design. But innovative design always develops in
tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself.

Good Design Makes
a Product Useful : A product is
bought to be used. It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional but
also psychological and aesthetic. Good design emphasizes the usefulness of a
product while disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it.

Good Design Is
Aesthetic : The aesthetic quality of a product is
integral to its usefulness because products are used every day and have an
effect on people and their well-being. Only well-executed objects can be

Good Design Makes
A Product Understandable : It
clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product
clearly express its function by making use of the user’s intuition. At best, it
is self-explanatory.

Good Design Is
Unobtrusive : Products fulfilling a purpose are like
tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design
should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s

Good Design Is
Honest : It does not make a product more
innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to
manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept

Good Design Is
Long-lasting : It avoids being fashionable and
therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many
years – even in today’s throwaway society.

Good Design Is
Thorough Down to the Last Detail : Nothing
must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process
show respect towards the consumer.

Good Design Is
Environmentally Friendly : Design
makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It
conserves resources and minimises physical and visual pollution throughout the
lifecycle of the product.

Good Design Is
as Little Design as
Possible : Less, but better – because it
concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with
non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.

To my opinion, a good design provides best functionality to
users with having average level of aesthetical implementation as well as using
eco friendly materials in the manner of sustainability. As the consumption of
our planet’s sources increases day by day I believe that sustainability will
have much bigger role on design in future. If we take on a hand designer who is
working for a company, they are mostly creating designs upon clients directions. At
this point with no doubt there are responsibilities which designers should
carry out.Designers should have principles to design globally for a better
world with not using non-ecological materials besides going on an abstract
level of material usage. They also need to observe users age range in order to
create an optimum design experience to be accessible for everyone.
