Infamous Doctors of the Holocaust

            Infamous
doctors of the Holocaust performed countless evil experiments on helpless
people including the mentally ill, to try to create the perfect German race
without Jews. Many times doctors would label patients “incurable” and mark them
with “+” which meant they were going to die. “Between 1939 and 1941, doctors
sentenced 70,000-100,000 Germans to death through their experiments in
“perfecting methods of group killings” (Fishkoff, 1996).

The Hollerith machine was used to
make it easy for Nazis to locate and identify the mentally ill, handicapped,
Jews, Gypsies, and other “undesirables.” This machine was “a simple
data-processing device which aided the Nazi regime in classifying citizens
according to residence, race, religion, marital status, and other crucial
criteria” (Conway, 1994). The Nazis wanted to find anyone that was not useful
to them or Jewish, and kill them so they could have the “perfect race”.  During the Holocaust, Nazi doctors wanted to
test the limits of the human body. To do this the doctors performed experiments
on the Jews like, subjecting them to high-altitude experiments, confining them
in low-pressure chambers until their lungs exploded(Silverstein, 1996). Also
Nazi doctors wanted to test and compare the effectiveness of vaccines so they
would find Jewish prisoners and inject them with diseases like, typhus, small
pox, malaria, cholera, and spotted fever.. Another thing doctors would do to
prisoners is, they would break their bones and then infect the wounds and have
the patients drink seawater until they had seizures and went into cardiac
arrest. Then the doctors would operate on them without anesthesia. Many doctors
were more focused on experimenting with the bodies than trying to save them
“But the doctor should not be a philosopher. His job is to preserve life”
(Fishkoff, 1996).

            A few of the
Nazi doctors are, Herta Oberheuser, Kurt Heissmeyer, Josef Mengele, and Carl
Clauberg. Herta Oberheuser was a doctor at the Auschwitz and Ravensbrück
concentration camps from 1940-1943. She conducted sulfanilamide as well as
bone, muscle transplantation and nerve regeneration  experiments on 86 women. Also she killed
children with oil and evipan injections, she would then remove all of the
children’s limbs and vital organs. She would keep the children fully conscious
throughout the entire experiment. The time between the injection and death was
about three to five minutes. She also put foreign objects like, , rusty nails,
pieces of wood, slivers of glass, dirt, or sawdust in the wounds of prisoners.
In attempt to find out how to stimulate the combat wounds of the German
soldiers. Kurt Heissmeyer was a doctor at the Neuengamme concentration camp. He
conducted an experiment on 20 Jewish children. He murdered them by hanging them
in the basement of Bullenhuser Damm school. Also he participated in the
experiment of injecting

tuberculosis into camp prisoner’s lungs. Josef Mengele was a German Schutzstaffel
officer and physician at Auschwitz concentration camp. “Mengele, with his
mentor, had performed a number of legitimate research protocols using twins as
test subjects throughout the 1930s. Now, at Auschwitz, with full license to
maim or kill his subjects, Mengele performed a broad range of agonizing and
often lethal experiments with Jewish and Roma (“Gypsy”) twins, most of them
children.” (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, “Introduction to the
Holocaust.”). Mengele performed multiple experiments like, incendiary bomb experiments,
high altitude experiments, Malaria experiments, mustard gas experiments,
Sulfanilamide experiments, spotted fever (Typhus) experiments, and experiments
with poison. Carl Clauberg was a German gynecologist at Auschwitz and
Ravensbrück concentration camps. He was trying to develop a method of mass
sterilization, he experimented on 700 Jews mostly women. He would inject toxins
in to their uterus to cause them severe pain, some even died. Also he worked
with Horst Schumann on X-ray sterilization experiments. At Auschwitz he was
given Block 10, there were hundreds of Jewish women there for him to experiment
on.

            There were
many different, terrifying experiments performed on the Jews, and other
“undesirables” during the Holocaust. For example freezing, “Nazi doctors
submerged victims in vats of icy water for periods of up to five hours in an
attempt to find ways to treat German pilots forced to eject into icy ocean
water. The victims were either naked or dressed in aviator suits and submerged
in water. Others were taken outside into the freezing cold and strapped down
naked.” (Benjamin James, July 7, 2011). Also, Nazi doctors did seawater
experiments, “The victims were deprived of all food and given only chemically
processed sea water. Such experiments caused great pain and suffering and
resulted in serious bodily injury to the victims.” (Benjamin James, July 7,
2011). Experiments were also done on twins, mostly by Doctor Mengele. “The
infamous Dr. Josef Mengele experimented on twins in an effort to learn the
secrets of multiple births and to find a way to quickly multiply the German
race. Mengele’s experiments were performed on prisoners at Auschwitz. He
experimented on 1,000 pairs of twins. Roughly 200 survived those experiments.
When twins were of no more use to Mengele, he’d dispatch subjects with an
injection of chloroform straight to the heart.” (Benjamin James, July 7, 2011).
Doctor Kurt Heissmeyer tried figure out if some people had a natural immunity
to tuberculosis in order to develop a vaccine. “Dr. Kurt Heissmeyer injected
the tuberculosis bacteria directly into the lungs of his victims at the
Neuengamme concentration camp. He was responsible for the deaths of at least
200 people” (Benjamin James, July 7, 2011). Phosgene Gas was another type of experiment.
“The Nazis subjected 52 concentration camp prisoners to Phosgene gas in an
attempt to find an antidote to the compound. Phosgene was used as a biological
weapon during WWI. The Nazis intentionally exposed victims to the gas, causing
unbearable irritation in the lungs. Many prisoners, already malnourished and
weak, suffered further complications after the experimental exposure, and four
died.”(Benjamin James, July 7, 2011). Lastly, Artificial Insemination was a
method of experimentation. “Dr. Carl Clauberg artificially inseminated about
300 women at Auschwitz, who were strapped down and taunted mercilessly.
Clauberg told his victims that he had used animal sperm to create a monster
inside of them.” (Benjamin James, July 7, 2011).

            In
conclusion, many infamous Holocaust doctors performed cruel, horrible
experiments on many innocent prisoners at concentration camps like, Auschwitz, Ravensbrück, and Neuengamme.
These doctors killed many innocent people trying to form the perfect race that
they never succeeded in creating.
