Ali SaidMr DraughnCivics p.525 January, 2018 Their are 27 amendments in the U.S Constitution. The First amendment states and provides to us ( the citizens), the five freedoms. Those freedoms are Freedoms of Religion,Press,Speech,Assembly and Petition. The first amendment that is most popular that attracts most immigrants is the freedom of speech. As the http://www.tep-online.info/ (From: Hartley, William H., Vincent, William S.. American Civics. N.Y., 1974, pp. 34ff) states “The right to express your ideas and opinions when you speak is called freedom of speech. Freedom of speech also means the right to listen to the thoughts and opinions of others. This freedom guarantees that Americans are free to express their thoughts and ideas about anything. They may talk freely to their friends and neighbours or speak in public to a group of people. Of course, no one may use his freedom of speech to injure others. If a person knowingly says things that are false about another, he may be sued in court by the person or persons who believe they have been harmed by what he said.” Many Americans embrace freedom of speech for the same reasons they embrace other aspects of individualism. Freedom of speech is the right to defiantly speak one’s mind just because it is one’s mind. Freedom of speech is sort of bonded in such a special and unique ways to the human capacity to think, imagine and create. Freedom of speech is intimately linked to freedom of thought, to that central capacity to reason and wonder, hope and believe, that largely defines our humanity. The freedom of speech is all about its name. It means you can basically say and publish whatever you want, but with that their are some restrictions. Freedom of speech their have been limitations created over time. Such as Fighting words, Child Pornagraphy, False statments of fact and the list goes on. The second most important freedom is the freedom of religion. This freedom is a big part on why america is the way it is now. Freedom of religion is one of the freedoms given to us in the first amendment. Freedom of religion is you can worship any god or anything you want. There is no main religion in the united states. The only Limitation is forcing another person to worship something. Congress is not allowed to enforce or have a national religion. They also can support one religion over another in other word no biases when it comes to religion. Other examples like teaches can not teach a certain religion. For examples the teacher can not make you take out the Quran or Bible or torah and study out of it. The third and final most important is the freedom of assembly. That is is a very critical because it helps the government know how us the citizens feel. These protests help us as the citizens communicate and express to congress and or any form of power on how we feel and what is right. Government official can not stop or prevent any gathering or assembly/protests, but with that comes one major restriction is that the assemblies must be peaceful. At that point police or government forces can get involved. Other than that limitation people can basically protest all they want about anything they desire. On one condition freedom of speech and assembly tie together because you have to follow and stay in the boundary limitations of the freedom of speech. For example you can’t go out in public and say “Kill All Muslims”. Those right there are hate words and the first amendment doesn’t protect or defend hate words. Therefore this amendment is quite relevant and very much needed in our not only as a country as a whole. Okay now back to the freedom of speech as I already explained all the limitations and how it came about to be what america is known for. Now the colonial era of the freedom of speech this freedom was a smart move because if this didn’t exist america would be in chaos. Now if we are talking about history the freedom to express yourself just by thoughts and pure speech where used to win elections overthrow communism win a nobel peace prize and much more. Instead now a days people just abuse the absolute power and responsibilities that come with this freedom. People just use this as a defense route or maybe to turn a whole countries perspective of being “free” upside down.Yet while the country continues to struggle mightily to define the limits and continues to debate the details. There is surprisingly little struggle and debate over the core of the faith. Americans truly do embrace the central belief that they very much do value it, linked to our defining characteristics as human beings. While limits must exist, American culture and law approach such limits with the caution and skepticism, embracing freedom of speech as a value of constitutional importance. The freedom of religion is a freedom that doesn’t go so into depth as the freedom of speech because it a very straightforward thing. As I explain above that you can worship anything you want and e.c.t . There is no possible way to be confused now or back then not much of a difference. I mean other than the racism and terrorist groups that really just ties into what I said about the freedom of speech. People now just take everything mentally too far like terrorist groups killing for no apparent reason. If everybody would start cooperating with society and and its default rules everything would be all good. Unfortunately that not how the real world works. To conclude I would say that if you want to be religieuse go ahead if not you don’t have to cause no one can stop you at least that’s what it states in the constitution. Other than those small slight change in differences everything seems the same from now and then. The very last freedom I will be mentioning is the freedom of assembly. This specific article https://www.loc.gov/law/help/peaceful-assembly/us.php (witten byAndrew M. WinstonLegal Reference Librarian October 2014) reports ” Such time, place, and manner restrictions can take the form of requirements to obtain a permit for an assembly. The Supreme Court has held that it is constitutionally permissible for the government to require that a permit for an assembly be obtained in advance. The government can also make special regulations that impose additional requirements for assemblies that take place near major public events. In the United States, the organizer of a public assembly must typically apply for and obtain a permit in advance from the local police department or other local governmental body. Applications for permits usually require, at a minimum, information about the specific date, time, and location of the proposed assembly, and may require a great deal more information. Localities can, within the boundaries established by Supreme Court decisions interpreting the First Amendment right to assemble peaceably, impose additional requirements for permit applications, such as information about the organizer of the assembly and specific details about how the assembly is to be conducted. This specific freedom has tied into many history events, and major gatherings. Such as the civil rights movement, women’s protest, the progressive era after the new deal and many more. The major event that really defines this freedoms is the civil rights movements. This protests shows all the variables necessary to this amendment. For example they didn’t act violently a matter a fact the authorities were the aggressive ones. While MLK and his huge group of peaceful protesters roamed the the streets and demanded for equality. They obeyed the following rules of the freedom of speeches restrictions. That was a memorable and very honorable protests in U.S history. On the other hand nowadays people still do protest and assemble and or gather for various reasons, But is slowly getting more violent over the years. Even more people day after day disobey the rules and restriction and or laws. Hopefully in the future people have a reasonable cause for their gathering or protest has a purpose and for everybody to corporate. In conclusion the freedoms of speech, press, assembly and the right to petition the government proclaims that citizens have the right to call the government to account. Freedom of speech and press allows citizens to communicate their ideas verbally and in writing, while freedom of assembly lets them publicly express a common interest. The right to petition allows citizens to point out to the government where it did not follow the law, to seek changes, as well as damages for such missteps. Of course, there are limits to these freedoms. One may not force the tenets of his or her religion on those who do not observe those beliefs. Harmful speech, such as yelling “fire” in a crowded room, is not protected, nor is a written lie that causes harm. As well, gatherings must be peaceful. Destruction of the property of others is not protected by the First Amendment. Overall the freedoms of Religion,Speech, and Assembly are the most commenley successful and important to our everyday lives and stands for what America is known best for.
