Youth Challenge Series – Report:

2014 Youth Challenge Series

The 2014 MBGA Youth Challenge was a blast! It is hard to believe that the show season is over but that leaves room for the best part; awards!

This year the MBGA show committee has really come together to continue moving this program forward for our youth members who are participating in the Youth Challenge.

The show committee decided to change the name of the series to allow the youth to compete with does against the wethers. If you attended any of the shows this summer you saw some really competitive does; which says a lot for our industry in Michigan.

We continue to add new things and grow the series each year! Our Early Bird entries were a great asset to the Challenge this past year and we are going to kick it up a notch with adding points for the 2015 challenge for attending the awards program! Also we will be reviewing the rules and taking all your input that we received all summer long to make decisions where we can change things to continue to improve the Challenge for 2015. Stay posted and we will have the rules posted to the website by March of 2015.

Each year I watch the showman that participate in the Youth Challenge grow in and out of the ring. Our committee believes in spotlighting our youth so if you see these kids that are involved in the challenge out in our communities doing great things please share them with us so that the members of MBGA can share in their successes as they grow and become the future of the goat industry in Michigan!

Many producers ask the question how does the youth challenge affect me as I am not producing show does or wethers? And my answer to that is that it strengthens the industry by providing young adults that are entering college a voice for goat production in Michigan. They are the ones who have experience with goats are able to ask the universities why there is not more research and promotion of the Michigan Goat industry. This focus helps strengthen your market without you even being aware of it. Also as the producers that are focused on producing show wethers improve their herd through investment in good genetics and learning new practices in their production environments they are putting a better product out on the market which is maintaining a better overall market price in Michigan. And last but not least this improvement bring better genetics to Michigan and makes them more available for all to access by purchasing more competitive animals right here in Michigan.

So a huge thank you goes out to all of our sponsors for this year!
